Sunderland defender Aji Alese says the Black Cats are striving for further improvement despite their play-off berth at the halfway mark of the season.

The former West Ham United trainee made his long awaited return to the Sunderland matchday squad against Preston North End, making his first appearance since the play-off semi-final defeat at Kenilworth Road last season.

The 22-year-old played the full 90 minutes for the Wearsiders in their 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United in the FA Cup Third Round defeat but admits he's still getting used to being back playing.

"I'm feeling good," Alese told Sunderland AFC. "Still getting used to be back in the team and playing week in, week out.

"It's what I want to do, it's part of being a footballer. I've just got to be ready for Saturday. It was seven months all together. Your body changes over that time and coming back and playing, your body has to get used to it again.

"That's the position I'm in at the minute and what I'm doing. It's great [to be back on the pitch]. When I'm out, all I want to be doing is be back playing, being back out out there and training everyday and being part of the team is what I've been working hard for.

"I think we've done well. Being in and around it is where we'd want to be at the beginning of the season. I think we can do better and still pick up more wins, really get a foothold where we are and solidify that top-six position."

Sunderland head to Portman Road looking to get one over their promotion rivals and exact revenge for the 2-1 defeat at the Stadium of Light earlier in the season.

Alese said: "They got promoted last year and they've got that momentum, but we've beaten teams that are above us already this season and we'll try and do the same on Saturday.

"When you've got thousands behind you pushing you on, you play that extra bit harder. Our away fans are amazing and they'll spur us on."
