SUNDERLAND have completed the signing of attacking-midfielder Romaine Mundle from Standard Liege.

Mundle, who can play on either flank or as a 'number ten', has signed a four-and-a-half year contract at the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats are understood to be paying an up-front fee of around £1m for the 20-year-old, with the total deal potentially worth around £2m once add-ons are included.

Having started his career in Tottenham's academy, Mundle impressed with Spurs' Under-21s side last season, scoring seven goals and claiming five assists in Premier League 2.

He was promoted to the first-team squad under Antonio Conte last March, but rejected the offer of a new contract in north London in order to move to Belgium in the summer.

Things did not go to plan with Standard Liege though, and he leaves the club after making six substitute appearances in the Belgian top-flight in the first half of the season.

“Talented players like Romaine are highly sought after and we saw this first hand in the summer when he left Tottenham Hotspur," said Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman.

"We didn’t anticipate him being available on a permanent basis, but when we sensed an opportunity, we moved quickly and decisively to make it happen - our ways of working and structure are a real strength in these moments.

Mundle is Sunderland's second signing of the January window, following on from defender Leo Hjelde, and is available to make his debut in Sunday's Tees-Wear derby at Middlesbrough.
