Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman believes now is the right time for Nathan Bishop to be regularly tested before the club reassess his situation next summer.

The former Manchester United trainee links up with League One side Wycombe Wanderers on a season-long loan deal having been a long-term target for the Chairboys.

The Wearsiders pipped the League One outfit to his signature last summer, and with two-years left on his current deal at the Stadium of Light, has left in search of senior football.

The Black Cats goalkeeper played second fiddle to Anthony Patterson last season, making just two senior appearances as well as a number of outings for the Under-21s.

Last season's interim boss Mike Dodds has previously hailed Bishop's professionalism, after handing him an opportunity to play in the final game of the 2023/24 campaign at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

Likewise, Speakman has reiterated that belief, explaining the recent departure. He said: “We’ve been really pleased with Nathan since his arrival last summer and feel this is a great opportunity for him.

"His professional standards and work ethic are excellent and to maintain such high levels throughout the past season as a number two goalkeeper is a testament to his character.

"He’s highly regarded in the squad and after putting the team first last campaign, he now needs to be tested regularly so we can assess and he can continue his personal development.”

A year of playing in League One will stand the 24-year-old in good stead, either forcing his way into contention for the number one spot on his return, or allowing the club to cash in on the shot stopper.

The arrival of Simon Moore has opened up the door for Bishop's exit, with fellow back-up goalkeeper Alex Bass sealing a permanent move to Notts County after impressing on loan with AFC Wimbledon last year. Sunderland will be hoping for a similar story here.

Wycombe boss Matt Bloomfield said: “Nathan is someone that Lee Harrison (Head of Goalkeeping) and I have admired for a long time, and we are delighted to bring him here for the 2024/25 season.

“Lee worked with him at Southend and has kept in touch with him over the years, which played a big part in helping us bring Nathan to the club.

“He’s already got close to 100 senior appearances under his belt and will have developed his game greatly alongside some top keepers at Manchester United and Sunderland over the last couple of years.

“There’s a fantastic opportunity for him here to compete for first-team football and we’re excited to welcome him into the squad.”
