Sunderland will face Preston North End in the first round of the Carabao Cup in the week commencing Monday, August 12.

Régis Le Bris will take charge of his first cup game as Sunderland head coach with a trip to Deepdale in what will be the club's second game of the season after the full 2024-25 Championship schedule was released on Wednesday, with Le Bris' first official game in charge coming away to Cardiff City on Saturday, August 10.

Sunderland are part of the Northern section of the League Cup draw and will be looking to improve on their last two showings in the competition where they have been eliminated at the first round stage by Sheffield Wednesday and Crewe Alexandra.

Sunderland's meeting with Crewe at this stage of the competition last season was significant after midfielder Chris Rigg levelled the scores and became the youngest goalscorer in the club's history in the process before Sunderland were eventually defeated on penalties.

Since reaching the final of the League Cup in 2014, Sunderland's best appearance came in the 2021-22 campaign where they made the quarter-finals with a trip to Arsenal.

Burnley, Luton Town and the 13 Premier League clubs not participating in Europe will enter the competition in round two, with the remaining seven Premier League clubs joining the competition in round three.

All League Cup ties are to be shown live on Sky Sports this coming season.
