Sunderland won't be signing Callum Styles on a permanent transfer from Barnsley this summer.

The Black Cats signed the versatile midfielder in the January transfer window with the view to make the move a permanent one, if he impressed at the Stadium of Light, but the deadline for that option has now passed.

Styles would make 12 appearances in the red and white of Sunderland, after a bout of appendicitis delayed his start to life on Wearside.

Playing predominantly as a left-wing back in a back five, or at left-back in a four man defence, Styles struggled to make an impact as the Black Cats' form took a nosedive in 2024.

Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman has paid tribute to Styles' attitude and application after explaining the club would not be taking up the option his his loan deal.

The Black Cats chief said: "As we continue to plan for the new season, we have decided not to take the option in Callum’s loan agreement and therefore his time with us has concluded.

"Callum’s attitude and application was first class throughout his time at the Club and we wish him well for the future."

Sunderland have been active in the first week of the summer transfer window, bringing in free agent Simon Moore to the Stadium of Light, while fellow goalkeeper's Nathan Bishop and Alex Bass have both departed.

Chris Rigg looks set to sign his first professional contract with the club, after agreeing a three-year deal with the Black Cats.
