Sunderland have signed former Preston North End midfielder Alan Browne on a three-year deal at the Stadium of Light.
Browne becomes Sunderland's second signing of the summer after goalkeeper Simon Moore arrived last month following his exit from Coventry City.
Republic of Ireland midfielder Browne left Preston at the end of the season after being named the club's player of the year. The 29-year-old spent 10-years at Deepdale and brings a wealth of experience to the Sunderland squad following the exits of Corry Evans and Bradley Dack.
Browne joined Preston in 2014 from Cork City and has made over 400 appearances for the club, with the majority of those coming in the Championship.
“It’s a big change for me after being at Preston for such a long time, but it’s brilliant to be here," said Browne.
"Sunderland is one of the biggest clubs in England and I can’t wait to get started. I captained Preston for some time, so hopefully I can bring those leadership qualities to the Stadium of Light and add to what is a very talented squad.”
Browne's signing emphasises a potential tweak to Sunderland's recruitment strategy this summer after calls for the club to add further experience following last season's disappointing 16th place finish in the Championship. Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman highlighted how Browne, who has been capped 35 times by the Republic of Ireland, has been on the club's radar over the course of the last year, with the midfielder keen to play a key role in bringing success to the Stadium of Light.
“Alan is a dynamic and versatile midfielder, who will complement the players within our squad and bring fresh qualities to our midfield," said Speakman.
"His availability is something we have closely followed throughout the last eight months and his ambition was at the forefront of our discussions. He believes he can fulfil those ambitions at Sunderland and after seeing our potential, he wants to play an important role in creating future success. We are delighted to welcome him to the club."
Browne is set to be involved in one of Régis Le Bris' squads this weekend as Sunderland begin their pre-season schedule with friendlies against South Shields and Gateshead.
