ROMAINE Mundle had to make a decision on his future in an instant when he learnt of Sunderland's transfer interest late in the January window - and although he's only been on Wearside six weeks and has arrived at a difficult time for the Black Cats, the young winger knows he made the right call.

Sunderland have lost six games on the bounce and slid out of top six contention but Mundle has shown flashes of his quality since arriving from Standard Liege late in the winter window.

Previous boss Michael Beale said he'd been surprised by how quickly and impressively Mundle settled in and the former Tottenham winger has started two of Mike Dodds' four games in charge - scoring his first goal for the Black Cats in Saturday's 4-2 defeat at Southampton.

Results have obviously not gone to plan for Sunderland or Mundle over the course of the last month but the 20-year-old is delighted he followed his gut in joining the Black Cats.

"To be fair it was a quick turnaround, I didn’t expect it but it was a decision I had to make on the spot and I’m happy with the decision and hopefully I can just keep going and working hard," said the winger.

"I knew Jack Clarke and Dennis Cirkin from Tottenham, and a couple of the other boys. It wasn’t like I was coming out of my comfort zone. The lads welcomed me from day one as well so I wouldn’t say it was too much of a drastic change. I just keep adapting to it.

"I had a couple of conversations with Jack, but just normal conversations just about how the club is right now and stuff like that. It wasn’t anything to like push it over the line because I was making that decision myself."

Mundle was well aware of Sunderland's glowing reputation when it comes to the development of young players.

"It’s a club that like to push the youth and get young players in the squad," he said.

"I feel like where I want to get to, it’s the perfect pathway for me.

"There has been a bit of change from where I was. I just have to keep working hard and just take every game as it comes. If I’m needed to come off the bench or needed to from the start I’m just going to keep working hard."

The youngster will be hoping to keep his place in the team for this coming Saturday's game against QPR, a crucial encounter for the Black Cats, who desperately need to stop the rot ahead of the international break.

Mundle says: "It’s a rollercoaster. This game is full of ups and downs. Some stuff has happened but we just have to deal with it as a team and stick together.

"I think in the Championship the games come thick and fast. You can’t really dwell on the past games, obviously you can be disappointed by not picking up results but you are looking forward and there are a lot of games to go.

"You obviously look back on the analysis days but you just have to move onto the next."
